“Our Story and This Land” is a permanent exhibit focusing on four connected themes. At the entrance to the “Back to the Land” gallery is a large floor map of Hsinchu County, forming the core of the exhibition area. Moving through scenes of Hsinchu is like following in the footsteps of our ancestors as they gradually made their way from the coast to the foothills and finally into the mountains, finding places to settle down along the way. “From Deer to Crops” describes how this land of ours went from a deer hunting ground of indigenous peoples to rice paddies and fields for cultivating crops. As you experience the vitality of life in the opening of Taiwan under Qing dynasty rule, you can listen to the problems encountered by elders. “A Very Different Hsinchu” introduces the modernization that Hsinchu underwent during the Japanese colonial period, and in “A Contemporary New Paradise” we see Hsinchu County take off with a confluence of diverse cultures.
